Trade Review: One Nut and Anal

One Nut Wonders receive:
1B Paul Konerko
SP CJ Wilson
14th rounder

Anal Hershieser receive:
3B/SS/OF Emelio Bonafacio
SP Henderson Alvarez
8th rounder

I really don’t understand this one from Andrew’s perspective.  Konerko was a keeper and no one would’ve scoffed at Pierce if he kept Wilson. Fifteen games has not changed that. Meanwhile, Bonefacio is a one-category wonder, who hadn’t displayed a high OBP until last year (career: .331) and certainly is not someone I would consider a clear keeper. His 3B/SS/OF eligibility is nice, but next year he’ll likely just be on OF. Meanwhile, he’s 27, meaning his basically is currently in his prime, meaning he is unlikely to get better and, given past performance, is more likely to get worse. He’s off to a nice start and Andrew should never lose the steals category, but he should’ve gotten much more. Either the pick should’ve been an 8th for a 24th or he should’ve gotten two picks. Based on past trades, the type of upgrade Jason received for both players warrants an 6-8-round upgrade for EACH. I don’t give HAlvarez any credit at this point. He’s a rook and we’ve seen plenty of rookies who have started nice, then sucked later down the road (see Zach Britton last year). He also doesn’t have a history of putting up high K numbers, meaning he’s at best a middle-of-the-road type.

The pick Andrew received is certainly a good one and he’s likely still smarting from the lack of early picks in the draft. Unfortunately, he could’ve had more and it would’ve made sense to announce these two were available to the league because he might’ve received some nice offers. Anyhow, judging by his comments, Jason clearly was disturbed by his lack of picks in the draft, so what did he do? Start trading 2013 picks! Can’t say I blame him in either case, but its funny to see this starting again. It will be interesting to see how people approach draft pick trades this year after having gone through a draft like we did. Looks like Jason is going to take the approach of just trading off future picks, which I suppose you could do into perpetuity.  Regardless, it certainly has helped him for 2012.
