Trade Review: Urban and Cowhide

Urban receives:
2B Brian Roberts BAL
17th rounder

Cowhide receives:
3B Michael Young PHI
21st rounder

Dave was surely counting on Young being traded to a team like the Yankees or Sox, but alas nothing happened. It still could if he clears waivers, but right now it doesn’t look like Dave will get much for his four rounds. Young’s uninspiring 40/8/34/1/.339 line makes you wonder how much he’d be able to accomplish anyway. Now, with Philly clearly looking to the future, it seems unlikely this trade will prove worth it. That said, it’s not a huge loss.

Makes a lot of sense for Dan, who clearly didn’t need Young and could benefit from a better draft board next year. Unless he gets dealt to the Yankees and is entrenched at third, Young is unlikely to give him much value.

Trade Review: Urban and Donkey

Urban receives:
SP Matt Cain SF
SP Brandon McCarthy ARI

Donkey receives
SP Jered Weaver LAA
SP Jeff Locke PIT

Didn’t understand this one from Dan. At the beginning of the year this would make sense, as Cain was looked at as a valuable long term keeper with great rates and consistent production while Weaver was injured early. But Cain is not having a good season. He’s been better as of late, particularly his last two starts, but still his shakiness is not enough to give up Weaver, who has been great, straight up – nevermind giving up the surprising Jeff Locke. Weaver is 78/2.90/1.12/10 in 15 starts while Locke is 94/2.36/1.22/12. Locke is clearly not this good and is likely to regress, but will he be as bad as McCarthy (39/5.00/1.43/4)? I highly doubt it. If Dan was getting back a pick, I could see this making some sense, but still the talent differential is substantial here and Chris clearly got the better of this trade.

Trade Review: Montezuma's and Cowhide

Montezuma’s receives:
SP Jordan Lyles
16th rounder

Cowhide receives:
SP Felix Doubront
22nd rounder

In combination with the previous deal, this made a lot of sense to capitalize on Doubront’s recent dominance (25/2.56/1.23/4) and get Peavy back from the DL.  It may have made more sense to replace Norris or Erasmo, but they were unlikely to yield a six round upgrade. With this, my draft board looks better than it did to start the year, which says something since I feel like I’ve great improved my team. Meanwhile, Doubront has been good for Dave and looks like a solid middle of the rotation guy with K upside going forward. He’s struck out less guys lately, seemingly in exchange for better control, which most would gladly take. Looks like a deal that will work out for both.

Trade Review: Montezuma's and Urban

Montezuma’s receives:
RP Casey Janssen
23rd rounder

Urban receives
SP Jhoulys Chacin
19th rounder

Tryin to maneuver my roster to get Peavy back from the DL, I decided to try to move Chacin and/or Doubront both of whom had been excellent. Chacin doesn’t strike out much, but he’s been an automatic QS over the past month (21/2.38/1.15/5) and overall has very solid numbers that is very helpful for a team in the need of some middle of the rotation help. Janssen meanwhile has been good, but has lacked opportunities to save. The Jays are seemingly out of it, so he’s likely to keep the closer role for the rest of the year – barring injury. And in the closing game, you can’t get saves unless you have closers. I only had one, so was fine giving up the late picks. Still, its clear Dan has gotten the best of this deal so far.
